Latest Weekly Digest

8 December 2019

News this week: plans for shared space along the waterfront past Eagle St Pier, and progress on the Botanic Gardens Riverwalk and North Brisbane Bikeway. Conversations from the suburbs about how shade and combining cycling with public transport can help ensure people can still get out and about despite the heat.

Reports of a “cycleway explosion in Brisbane” are greatly exagerated, but the good ones are certainly being well used, and we continue to watch progress on the North Brisbane Bikeway and SE Veloway with great anticipation. The news is not so positive in most other parts of Brisbane though; this week we discuss how Brisbane is failing at truly inclusive transport, although that’s not through lack of technical expertise.

We heard from experts at the International Cycling Safety Conference, and enjoyed showing them the highlights and challenges of cycling in Brisbane. Howard Smith Wharves have been asked to rectify their unauthorised construction, and we’ve questioned Council’s priorities on local bikeways.

17 November 2019

Consultation has begun on Council’s plan for 5 new green bridges, and on the Queensland Government”s plan to upgrade the Lindum Station precinct. Disappointingly, on-street parking won out over public safety on Dornoch Tce, in a move we hope doesn’t set the agenda for future projects. Meanwhile, cargo-bike culture is starting to develop in Brisbane’s suburbs.

Cycling is transport! This week we helped return Ben and Sharon’s pedal-powered family wagon. We met with politicians and candidates all around Brisbane in our ongoing campaign to shift the conversation about what type of investment of resources and public space will best serve our city’s future. Also this week, tickets went on sale for the best Brisbane bike-themed event of 2020!
