Getting the needs of people who ride bicycles onto the political agenda costs money.
Back in 2015, Space4cyclingBNE formed as a coalition of the Bicycle User Groups in Brisbane. Our aim was to be a voice for cyclists in the 2016 local government elections. We achieved this by meeting with candidates and discussing bicycle riding and active transport issues within each ward.
We got bicycle riders’ concerns heard and continue to do so. Just recently we presented a petition to council for a grid of protected bike lanes in the CBD which gained almost 3,000 signatures — the most of any of council’s online petitions.
Whilst communicating with council continues we are also preparing ourselves for next the State and Local Government Elections.
Much of the cost has been in volunteers’ time. But brochures and other measures to get the message about bicycle riders’ needs out there require money.
Each year since 2016 we have held a successful movie night that raised some funds for our campaign, but we also need your help.
