Space4CyclingBNE has spoken to Jonathan many times. He has this to say with regard to cycling: Right now, Brisbane needs barrier-separated bicycle lanes to make cycling safe and easy for people of all ages and abilities. In many parts of Brissie, the most efficient way to achieve this is to take away some street parking, or replace a car lane with multidirectional bike lanes. This will reduce the number of cars on the road, thereby reducing both traffic congestion and the demand for parking. But such changes can’t be made in isolation. We need system-wide reform of our transport networks to make public transport cheaper and more efficient, to separate bikes from both pedestrians and cars, and to make it safer and easier for people to walk to school and work. We also need to design neighbourhoods around local commercial nodes to minimise the amount of daily driving that residents must do to destinations like the local shops. Brisbane’s current car-centric transport planning is inefficient and economically unsustainable.
