Runcorn Labor

John Prescott

On Saturday morning, John Prescott, the Labor candidate for Runcorn Ward joined Kurt and Johnny from Brisbane South BUG on a slightly soggy bike adventure around Runcorn and Sunnybank Hills.

Since borrowing a bike to explore Runcorn Ward with us back in 2020, John has become a regular rider, using his bike to commute, exercise. and go on social adventures with friends. So he’s very familiar with not only the many benefits of riding a bike, but also the many issues (big and small) that we often face. He even had his own “favourite” missing connection to show us – past Bonemill Road Park & Margaret Page Oval.

It wasn’t all rainbows after the morning rain though; we came across paths that finished just short of being really useful, and some with added hazards making them very difficult to use at all. We checked out some small missing connections where desire lines show peoples attempts to access Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown. We also explored some bigger missing links, like through to Wally Tate Park where a path would help people access community and sporting facilities and avoid the not-so-people-friendly Beenleigh Road.

It’s really positive being able to engage with candidates like this, who are aware of the importance of filling out the cycling network and who support bike riding as a viable and fun transport option. Thanks to John for catching up with us and discussing how investing in local infrastructure will make biking around Runcorn Ward and Brisbane even better.
