Northgate LNP

Cr Adam Allan

After a chance encounter on the bikeway with Councillor Adam Allan (LNP – Northgate Ward) last week, Andrew from Brisbane North BUG and Brendan (who is also an e-scooter advocate through eScootNow) organised a ride with him on Friday morning along the Kedron Brook Bikeway – which is essentially the southern edge of Northgate Ward.

Like many people in the business community, Cr Allan re-discovered bike riding as an adult after doing some corporate triathlons and enjoying the cycling. These days he sometimes uses his bike to get to events in his ward. He told us that during his road-side promotions he has certainly noticed the diverse range of people using the Kedron Brook Bikeway for leisure, exercise, commuting, and for the trip to school or child-care.

On the ride we talked about the importance of connecting missing links—in particular Stage 5 of the North Brisbane Bikeway—so more people can access great facilities like the Kedron Brook Bikeway. Andrew and Brendan emphasised the importance of completing the NBB for people in Northgate Ward.

At the traffic lights on Shaw Rd, Andrew pointed out that people using the bikeway are required to wait through a full traffic cycle to cross the driveway entrance to the sporting fields. He suggested this could be improved by making the lights dwell on green for people walking and riding at the same time as people driving along Shaw Road have a green light.

At the old Toombul Shopping Centre we talked about the future options for the site, and Andrew stressed that future developments need to include active transport corridors connecting through to the Kedron Brook Bikeway.

Along the way Cr Allan also hinted at some upcoming safety improvements on the Kedron Brook Bikeway around the Gympie Road underpass area. (Yes please!)

Thanks to Cr Adam for taking the time to ride with us. See you on the bikeway!
