Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Over the 2024/25 holiday period, the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority invited public submissions on the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, “opening the floor for community, business and industry insights on key planning aspects”.

We have called for Brisbane to follow the examples of London (2012) and Paris (2024) in planning for a legacy of increased uptake of cycling and other forms of active transport for short to medium journeys in the city, enabled and supported by a network of excellent bike lanes. Like London and Paris, Brisbane should develop a connected and legible network of safe and inviting cycle routes linking to games venues, public transport hubs, and other city attractions. Planning and construction of this network should begin early, with the aim of having these routes operational and in regular use well before the games. Secure bicycle parking should be offered at all Games venues.

We gave recommendations for providing active transport access to likely Brisbane games venues in line with the Principal Cycle Network Plan. Our analysis includes the Brisbane Athlete’s Village at Northshore Hamilton, the Chandler Sports Precinct, Queensland Tennis Centre, Ballymore Stadium, and Manly Boat Harbour. We have also included analysis of options for a main stadium at the Gabba, Victoria Park, and QSAC, as well as suggestions for a number of alternative venues.
